The given pie charts compare the expenses in 7 different categories in 1966 and 1996 by American Citizens.

The two pie charts illustrate the proportion of money spent on various expenses in 1966 and 1996. It is clear that in 1966 food was the main expense, while 30 years later it was cars that came top.

According to the first pie chart, in 1966 the greatest proportion of expenditure (44%) was on food. Another 23 per cent went on cars, while the other expenses together accounted for the remaining third. While the figures for the remaining expenses/items ranged from 10% for furniture to 1 % for computers.

Between 1966 and 1996, the proportion of money allocated to food declined more than 3 times to comprise 14%. In contrast, expenditure on cars almost doubled. When it comes to petrol, the figure remained fairly stable while that for restaurants increased 2 times rising to 14%. Spending on furniture dropped marginally from 10 to 8 per cent, with the figure for computers rocketing to 10 per cent.
